stumptown revisited – for who knows how long

March 30th, 2009

Let’s see. The pines in the backyard had probably been there for over 50 years – basically as old as me. Slowly and inexorably I am hacking these things out. I know there is some kind of mechanized monster machine that can probably wrench these things from the earth — but, somehow I am thinking that these things deserve to fight back; and I deserve to be the one to get to the root of it all.

surf cleaners in encinitas

March 30th, 2009

This was a couple of weeks ago on a coast ride through Encinitas. I saw this dry cleaner and smiled. I envisioned laundry placed in a wire mesh container and thrown into the shorebreak for a half hour. Salt-spray clean and environmentally friendly ….

homage to a great pair of cycling shoes

March 30th, 2009

These guys lasted for over three years. Through probably 12,000 miles. They were on my feet two years ago when the drunk driver in a black corvette tried to take me out. Finally, the soles just broke off and its time to move on. Farewell, old shoes …..

throw me a bone, so I can chew the thing alone

March 27th, 2009

Some things shouldn’t change and Dan Hicks hasn’t. Went with a very old friend to a great music club (Belly Up in Solana Beach) the other night and, although a little older and bigger – like the rest of us – this guy is still making phenomenal music. Categorize it if you can – but I can’t.

Hicks claims its simple – Caucasian hip-hop

And big surprise that he designed the album cover – “Fire-tongued guy” – I didn’t buy the t-shirt

bank of america bullshit

March 14th, 2009

Cuomo is trying to publicize the names of the Merrill bonus recipients and BofA is fighting on privacy and “poaching” grounds.

The argument on privacy has some merit; I mean, once the bonus baby’s names are released, discontents can storm their upper-east-side apartments (if they are not hiding in their homes in southern france).

The bank’s other argument is laughable – foreign competitors can poach our employees. Does the bank think their competitors are unaware of their best players? And who cares anyway. Its like a scene from Shaun of the Dead. They’re all bankrupt anyway — nationalization is inevitable here.

No one on earth should be paid more than a million a year – sorry, but no skill is that exceptional; I’ll find someone as good who will do it for half that.

john sullivan’s tuna

March 10th, 2009

Here is a great example of what you see on a bike that you would otherwise miss in a car. Several months ago as I was riding through La Jolla Shores, I see this guy running down the street holding a very active fish (I guess he didn’t know to bash it on the head to put it out of it’s misery) by the gills.

He looked up at me and said, “Do you have a camera?”

I replied, “Yep”

So we ran back to his kayak for a picture session. He had been out about a half an hour, hooked the fish and it dragged him around for quite awhile before he got it in his kayak. I made a mental note to add a fishing kayak to my toy list.

just under the marine layer

March 3rd, 2009

Coming in today just under the marine layer – which is rapidly disappearing right now. Met a guy on the ride in – his second ride of the year. Says he has about 60 lbs. to drop and I believe him. He normally takes the I-5 bike lane (which I regard as complete insanity) and he is toying with the idea of riding the Torrey Grade. He didn’t like the idea of cranking up the hill every day  as we blasted down the hill.
