got to get back into the surf

February 26th, 2009

Major jones this morning to get back in the break. Riding past Torrey Pines beach this morning there were a bunch of people out. Break was outside and sharp and symmetrical (not flat). Jim has to get off his lazy ass and get in there ….. a lot to do but is it the right stuff?

what I would say to carol bartz, despite her not giving a damn what I say

February 25th, 2009

A lot of swirling wind regarding the impending Yahoo reorganization. It needs reorganization and a more of a traditional structure (which is what the rumor mill says is coming).

A decision to jettison Marco Boerries would be a huge mistake. The reason he’s an easy target is because he actually makes his people work and he holds them accountable. He pushes people to do things they couldn’t otherwise do and he doesn’t coddle them – you screw up, it’s your fault and he tells you so. Valley-wogs don’t like that.

Don’t make this mistake, let him steer your mobile initiatives and get out of the way and make sure you integrate the mobile experience into your main page.

just the ride home

February 24th, 2009

I switch off between two bikes depending on weather and mood. I had been riding my Surly LHT because it has been kind of wet and I was off the bike for a week when they put a new zapper in me and the Surly is easy to ride. This week I got back on the Torelli.

Now, its not like I haven’t ridden the Torelli for a month or something but even after only being off it for a week I realized again what it is like to have a machine that feels like it is an extension of your own arms and legs – like it is a part of your body. It is really a cool thing and I think you have to be riding just the right bike for you. Anyway, I had to leave work a little early yesterday and as I crested the Torrey grade on the way home I looked to my right and saw this

;

After I took this picture (with my phone cam), a beautiful woman (for me, not a kid but maybe 35+, great shape, etc.) ran by with a big smile and hello. I kept going up Torrey Pines and off to my right a guy jogging who also looked up with a big smile and a wave. I realized generally how happy people who enjoy an outdoor exercise routine can be.

microsoft to open retail stores

February 13th, 2009

This was the tech headline at a number of feeds this morning. When I see something like this I want to run away screaming. Didn’t these idiots learn from the Zune? Opening a chain of “Microsoft Stores” is stupid beyond George-Walker-Bush-stupid. Redmond doesn’t have the chops to do it right.

I am going out on a limb and predicting that this “new” initiative will be as successful and cool as the “Mojave Project”, Zune and Vista — All lumped together.

this one gets my attention

It already seemed as if this recession was as bad as the early ’80s, so it would be interesting to see those job losses posted here – nonetheless, I think you get the drift.

this seems a little off the mark

February 7th, 2009

Its been raining on and off here for a few days so I have not ridden the bike. Along my commute I pass by the Torrey Pines golf course where they are playing the Buick Invitational golf tournament now. There are not a lot of people there compared to the US Open last summer and there are A LOT fewer “Corporate” fat-cat hospitality tents. I suppose when you take billions of dollars of taxpayer money you play down that kind of stuff.

Anyway, I digress.

This is a picture of a some kind of huge GMC Yukon hybrid car with Michigan manufacturer license plates (never seen these before). So, its a car that I guess is good for the environment but still probably only gets 20 MPG. This seems to me a good example of “not getting it”. You boneheads are competing against the Prius and the Honda hybrids, not hybrid Toyota Land Cruisers.

another day

February 3rd, 2009

So I am riding up the Calle Del Oro like I do every day and I happen to look over my shoulder. Not a bad view. Riding the route for a year and never looked back ….. so much for observant.
